What are the most common symptoms?
Celiac disease can affect many different organs and systems in the body, resulting in a wide variety of symptoms that vary from person to person. The most common symptoms are:
  • Diarrhea or constipation
  • Weight loss or weight gain
  • Fatigue
  • Vomiting
  • In children, failure to grow
Other symptoms such as anemia, osteoporosis, and vitamin or mineral deficiencies may also occur. Celiac disease is suspected in some individuals because they have a non-intestinal complaint that may be associated with celiac disease, such as a skin condition called dermatitis herpetiformis (itchy skin rash made up of raised red patches which may cluster), mouth ulcers, diabetes, osteoporosis, infertility, thyroid disease, allergies, food intolerance, or a neurological condition.
In addition many persons who are gluten Intolerant can suffer from the same issues as Celiac.
